Trying to write to /var in custom scripts will not fail, however, it will not work on the filesystem unless specifically mounted. Consider mounting it at the start of the combustion script and unmount it at the end. This wouldn't require for users to mount it themselves.

Oh yes! I stumbled into that one today. I'm always struggling in not knowing what I must mount and what not.

The other most commonly used volumes /etc and /opt are mounted by default.
