I see that there's a translation for \mathit{n}, so that's useful; maybe that should be the default? For what it's worth, I wouldn't normally expect $n$ and $\mathit{n}$ to be rendered identically (cf. examples here), but it's certainly close.
It would be nice if individual letters were italicized, as one would normally do in mathematical text. The relevant Unicode block is given in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematical_Alphanumeric_Symbols
But maybe there's a reason you don't already do that?
