Better to assign color tokens to objects, or assign to style and then style to object?

I'm curious about the pros and cons of two different paths for assigning color to objects:

1. Assign a color token directly to the object

or.

2. Sync color token with styles, and then assign the style to the object.

Which is the better practice? or are they practically equivalent?
