Montezuma's Revenge
You get six lives in total, and lives are represented by the hats at the top of the screen. Here are the ways I've died so far: falling, running into an enemy without a weapon, running into an electric wall, and falling into a fire pit.
There are three types of enemies: skulls, snakes and spiders. If you run into an enemy without a weapon, you lose a life, but the enemy will be gone until you run out of lives entirely. If you have a sword and you run into an enemy, the enemy disappears without you losing a life, but you lose the sword.
There are many different items and collectibles in the game, and I haven't been able to discover them all yet. Here is what I know so far:
- Collecting a key is worth 100 points.
- Collecting a sword: 100 points.
- Unlocking a door: 300 points.
- Collecting a gem: 1000 points.
- Killing an enemy with a sword: 2000 points.
- There are electric walls that blink in and out. You have to time your movement to walk past them while they're deactivated.
- There are platforms that blink in and out. If you're standing on one far above the ground when it blinks out, you'll fall and die.
- Some areas are dark and while you can see certain things (so far I've been able to see enemies and a fire pit), most things (like platforms, ropes, and ladders) aren't visible. I think there's a lantern you can collect, but I haven't been able to find it yet, so I don't know how much it helps with visibility.
- There are conveyor belts that when you stand on them, they move you quickly in a certain direction.
Stuff I found on the Wikipedia page
- The pyramid is nine floors deep, not counting the entry room at the beginning of each level.
- There are 99 rooms in the pyramid.
- The goal of the game is to reach the Treasure Chamber, whose entrance is in the center room of the lowest level. When the player is here, they have a short time to jump from chain to chain and collect as many gems as possible. Jumping onto a fireman's pole will immediately take the player to the next level. The player is automatically thrown on the pole when time runs out.
- There are nine total difficulty levels, in which the basic layout of the pyramid remains the same from one level to the next. However, there are small changes that make the player rethink their strategy. These changes include: blocking/opening up certain paths by adding/removing walls or ladders, adding enemies and obstacles, rearranging items, making more rooms dark and adding fewer torches (the entire pyramid is dark by level 9), and making enemies that don't disappear after killing the character (starting at level 5).
- In level 1, the player can only access the left half of the pyramid. They can only access the right half in level 2. The whole pyramid is available from levels 3 onward.
Maps of the game that I found here
I'm not including these maps here, because they look very similar to the map for level 3 (I can't see any differences other than color), but they're on the web page I linked.
