In the translation PO file it says:

#: ../share/virtaal/virtaal.ui.h:20
msgid "_Update to Template"

Would it not be better to say the following?:

"_Update from Template"

I'm not sure why it would be an improvement. Can you maybe explain your preference?

My thinking is that the action will upgrade/upate the structure of the .po file to the structure of the .pot file. That is why my preference is "to".

I guess its just two ways of thinking or maybe what im used to seeing in other software perhaps.

Poedit have:

Update from &POT file…

Guess it could also just be:

_Update

Should the update and export menu items perhaps also have "..." at the end since there is user interaction afterwards?

Both seems correct

  • "_Update to Template" , is about state change.
  • "_Update from Template" , is about data flow.

English is a foreign language to me. As a technical user, I usually think of data flow.

What about "Update using Template"?

By the way I also find "to" confusing.

Would there ever be more then one way to update?
If there will ever only be one way to update then maybe "_Update" will be fine.
Sure it may not contain so much information but then maybe the title of the dialog that opens would say "Select template file".
And if the dialog defaults to showing only templates files that would be nice to.
That way the menu item can be short as "_Update" and the user will quickly understand that its about selecting a template file.
I dont know if this only applies to PO/POT files or other kinds of updating.

In my opinion, "_Update" might not be totally clear for the translator what this button does. I like "Update Using Template". @unho "Using" (uppercase u) would be better to keep consistence of title-case labels, don't you think?

@rffontenelle To be honest I was just focusing on the wording.

I think maybe "_Update using Template" is the best suggestion so far.

Usually i prefer short like "_Update" which might not makes sense until after the first time you use it.
Sort of like the first time you see the X button on a window title bar you might not know what it does but after trying it one time you know.

I think this function to be able to update a PO file in a GUI without having to write commands is very useful so i hope we can find a good translation.
