Background Notification on Desktop Client

Is it possible that I get notifications for new emails on the desktop client even when the app isn't open?

Is this technically possible, especially on Mac?

I think it would be possible on mac if we would use the PushKit framework for the desktop client as well. Currently we rely on our own notification channel which requires a background process but it works for all supported operating systems.
