Can you restore editor history?

can I persist editor.history and restore it later to a new instance of the editor to allow the user to undo/redo changes again?

I'm on version 32. This use to work in an older version I was using but the existing implementation I have no longer works in this version. Previously to restore state I was assigning the history back to editor.history. Is there a new way I should do this, something that involves updating the context maybe?
