We are testing against ESMF 8.2.0, which is pretty old. 8.4.0 is the current release of ESMF.

One challenge is that starting with ESMF 8.3.0, the PIO library is required...

OK I have a PR up with more testing for ESMF versions.

We are now testing with 8.2.0, 8.3.1, and 8.4.0 (the current release).
