translationCore 0.8.1 Release Notes

Windows Installation Notes

  • The installation may include installing an update to the .Net framework. After the installation completes, a .Net install dialog may remain on the screen. If that happens just click Cancel.
  • When installing on a machine that did not have an earlier version of tC loaded on it
    • When launching the application after the installation, an error message may appear stating that Git needs to be installed. In that case, click on the “Close translationCore” button.
    • Restart tC either from the Start menu or from the desktop icon (if installed).
  • After installation, starting the application can take a long time (7+ minutes on some machines). Please be patient. Subsequent launches of tC will be faster, but may still take a few minutes.

  • Install latest Git if Git 2.9.2 if it is not already on the computer.
    • Go to https://git-scm.com/download/mac and the executable should automatically download.
    • If your download hasn't started, click the link that says “Click here to download manually.”
    • Open the downloaded file
    • If your Mac’s permissions did not allow the installation to start then follow the following instructions:
    • Go to System preferences
    • Open Security & privacy
    • Click on the “Open anyway” button at the bottom
    • Then click open
    • The installation should automatically start.
    • Click continue
    • Then Install
  • It make take a few minutes to open tC the first time. Please be patient.
  • If you have updated to High Sierra, you will need to open your terminal and run xcode-select --install (this will solve an issue with GitHub)

Alignment Tool Usage Notes

  • Only the Alignment tool is available
  • When importing from USFM:
    • After choosing the project’s language, wait for several seconds after the Continue button becomes enabled before clicking it.
  • Only the English ULB and the Greek BHP are opened by default in the scripture panel. Click on the + sign in the rightmost section of the scripture panel to add another language. Use the X and + controls in the scripture to close and open the sections to move the languages to different sections.
  • A green check mark will be displayed by the verse in the verse list after all of the words in the word list have been aligned to the Greek.
  • The percentage complete indicator displayed by the Chapter card in the menu is calculated based on the number of words aligned vs the number of words in the chapter.
  • The percentage complete indicator displayed on the Word Alignment tool card is calculated based on the number of verses complete vs the number of verses in the book.
  • Alignment data is NOT exported as part of either the USFM export or CSV export.
  • Alignment projects can be shared by uploading first to Door43 and then imported to a different machine.

Drag and drop alignment instructions/constraints…(from and to the word list)

  • Align indefinite articles to their “head word”. For example, “a servant” should align to doulos in Titus 1:1.
  • Definite articles that English supplies should be aligned to their “head word”. For example, “the faith” should align to pistin in Titus 1:1.
  • Implicit verbs in Greek/Hebrew that are translated explicitly in target language should be aligned with the predicate.
  • Words with apostrophes will be split and show up as 2 words in the word panel. In most cases with the ULB these are used to represent possession and should be aligned together. For example, theou in Titus 1:1 should align to “God” “s”.
  • Often the Greek and target language part of speech won’t match, that’s OK. For example, “does not lie” in English aligns with apseudes in Titus 1:2.

Merge and un-merge instructions/constraints

  • tC supports one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one, and many-to-many alignments. One or more GL words can be aligned to one or more Greek words.
  • To align multiple GL words to a single Greek word, simple drag and drop the GL words in the box below the desired Greek word.
  • Once aligned, the GL words can individually be moved to another GL box or returned to the GL word list.
  • When it is desired to align GL word(s) to a combination of Greek words, first drag one of the combination * Greek words into the same box as the other one. Multiple words can be merged together in this fashion.
  • To un-merge previously merged Greek words, drag the rightmost Greek word slightly to the right. A small new alignment box will appear, and the un-merged word can be dropped into that box.
  • Only the rightmost merged Greek word should be unmerged
  • The current user interface indicates that the leftmost merged Greek word can be unmerged, but that action is not currently supported.

Expected behavior when un-merging Greek words

  • The GL words are returned to word list
  • The Greek words should remain in the proper order. In certain circumstances the returned words may not be in the proper sequence. This will not impact the ability to properly align them to the Greek.
  • If the merge contains 3 or more Greek words, un-merging the center word(s) may result in the Greek words becoming out of order. When that happens, un-merge the remaining words in that box to properly reorder the Greek.

Alignment Anomalies

  • Under certain circumstances both the GL and Greek words can get merged in the wrong order. Un-merge all of those words to correct the problem.
  • Under certain circumstances words that get returned to the word list due to the un-merging of Greek words do not get placed in the project sequence in the word list.
  • In an English project, conjunctions and possessives in the GL are separated into multiple “words”; e.g. “God’s” is separated into “God” and “s”.
  • We are unsure about the accuracy of the tokenization of the Hindi ULB, though Titus seemed to work OK.
  • If a GL word is accidentally dropped while it is still in the word list frame, both it and the word list get hidden. Click in the word list area to make them visible again.
  • In some cases when attempting to merge Greek words the potential target gets highlighted in blue even though the Greek word cannot be dropped there.
