In the hfsexplorer "Type" column, everything not a folder is labelled as "File". I think there would be value in populating the file extensions as Windows Explorer does so that the Type column could then be sorted by file type instead of just name or date.

Windows Explorer file type registrations are dynamic and dependent on the computer's installed software. HFSExplorer couldn't possibly keep a database of every content type and file extension within the app itself.
However if sorting by file extension / content type is the main issue then maybe that could be achieved without interpreting it further.
