The GitHub tarballs don't have the version set in their egg-info, which makes pip install act weird:

$ pip install -e .
Obtaining file:///Users/guyer/Downloads/fipy-version-3_1_2
Installing collected packages: FiPy
  Found existing installation: FiPy unknown
    Can't uninstall 'FiPy'. No files were found to uninstall.
  Running setup.py develop for FiPy
Successfully installed FiPy
