It has been said that #3445 and other broad topology work would benefit from event metadata. A data model change of this magnitude requires an RFC. Some notes about the work were added here.

Requirements

  • Cover the use cases that require event metadata (ex: e2e latency, e2e ack'ing?, etc)
  • Cover performance and the design decisions that will enhance it (ex: sharing common metadata across events)
  • Cover the characteristics
    • Can users manipulate metadata or is it read-only?
    • Fully structured?
  • Propose exact event interface changes, show examples.
  • Anything else I'm missing

@bruceg I'm blocking the e2e work on this. Let me know if that is not correct.
