Description

The text-box-trim property allows trimming this additional space above and below the first and last lines of a block, allowing more precise control over spacing around the glyphs. Moreover, by relying on font metrics rather than hard-coded lengths, it allows content to be resized, rewrapped, and rendered in a variety of fonts while maintaining that spacing.

Previously proposed in #155 (albeit since renamed).

This proposal also benefits designers, whose design tools already support leading-trim:

According to designers—unfortunately, without browser support, the design tool support of vertical trim is not only useless, but also causes more work for the developer.

Chrome has Intent to Prototype, and Google fonts references the upcoming leading-trim feature too.

Thank you for proposing text-box-trim for inclusion in Interop 2024.

We wanted to let you know that this proposal was not selected to be part of Interop this year.

As of the deadline, the specifications for text-box-trim were not yet complete enough to allow interoperable implementations. To make progress on this area in the future, it will first be necessary to ensure that the feature has a clear specification in a standards track document.

For an overview of our process, see proposal selection. Thank you again for contributing to Interop 2024!

Posted on behalf of the Interop team.
