This came up in w3c/paint-timing#50. The HTML specification mentions the term rendering context in various places on https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/canvas.html yet it doesn't seem to ever formally define what it is.

See #3364. Unfortunately the canvas element section is quite dated in terms of best practices.
