Exporting makes the Geom accessible to other packages. For example, it could be used to fit labels within parallel sets and parallel labels in the ggforce package.

This is a good idea – I'll consider it for the next major release.

In the meantime, most of the actual text resizing code is in makeContent.fittexttree() which is exported. This is how I draw the text labels in treemapify and gggenes for example.
