Contextual help needed in settings #476
Comments
Totally agree - would love to see some more thought go into this. #377 is related. |
Closing this as a duplicate of #377, but we should still reference @krogsgard's thoughts above during the fix. |
@lukecarbis and I just finished a rather deep 2 hour discussion on this whole subject. Without getting into too many details here, I'll just say we've arrived to an exciting solution that will revamp the UI and connectors API to be much more intuitive to both users _and_ developers while leaving the database architecture/schema of Stream untouched. At a high level, Connectors and Contexts will be paired into a single Context selection, and Contexts and Actions will become relational while keeping Actions non-hierarchal in the sense that they can still transcend Connectors. I will probably end up creating a new issue for this entirely just to spell out all the requirements and provide UI mockups. And it's safe to say I officially owe @krogsgard a beer for bringing this whole conversation back to life. 😺 /five! /cc @Japh |
I was exploring the various settings, trying to see what could be controlled. I have a couple of questions.
Screenshot of what I'm talking about: https://cloudup.com/cQXBdnS3pNM
First, definitions of "Actions" and "Context" and other items would be very helpful. I'm a savvy user but have no idea really what these mean without seeing a number of stream items to provide that context.
Second, as an example, what is "Post Status"? Is it the name of my site (yes), the name of a theme (yes), an option in the database, a plugin? It's impossible to tell. I'd advise, if the plugin can detect, to give a context for each dropdown item. Perhaps a light gray text (theme) or whatever could help identify what I'm looking at as a user.
To further address the point, "Interactive" is another item in that particular dropdown. I have no clue what that is, and I'm on my website where I took this screenshot dozens of times per day :) Perhaps some extra context could help me figure it out.
