Changing workspace in i3 doesn't trigger window focus animation on target workspace window #1290

Steps of reproduction

Use i3 config located here: https://github.com/sabrehagen/dotfiles-i3/blob/master/.config/i3/config

  1. Probable requirement, not tested without scratchpad: ensure an application is running on an i3 scratchpad and the scratchpad is not visible.
  2. Open a window on workspace 1. Will not receive focus and will be transparent.
  3. Move to workspace 2. Open a window on workspace 2. Will not receive and will be transparent.
  4. Move to workspace 1. Workspace 1 window will not receive focus and will be transparent.
  5. Show scratchpad. Hide scratchpad. Workspace 1 window will receive focus and become opaque.

Expected behavior

On move to new workspace, workspace window gets focus animation and transitions from transparent to opaque.

Current Behavior

On move to new workspace, workspace window does not get focus animation and stays transparent. Running xdotool getwindowfocus getwindowname on a workspace with a terminal that has not had the focus animation applied reports that the workspace window is the currently focused window. That is, window has focus, but focus animation has not triggered.

Other details

This started happening in the few days after building from latest source. I expect it is a result of one of these commits:
