Maxmind to S3 Fetcher

Meant to be run as a cron job (e.g. weekly), this small script fetches Maxmind's latest geoip2 City database and caches it in S3 under key GeoIP2-City.mmdb. This helps to keep your individual services from pounding Maxmind's servers directly.

It is recommended to run it as a docker container, but if you want to run it manually then first install the python package boto3.

After cloning this repo, you can run it like this

    cd src
    python run.py --maxmind_license_key <YOUR_MAXMIND_LICENSE> --s3_bucket <YOURBUCKET> --aws_access_key_id <YOURID> --aws_secret_access_key <YOURSECRET>

Docker instructions

After cloning, edit Dockerfile to specify the following env vars

    ENV MAXMIND_LICENSE_KEY=<YOUR_MAXMIND_LICENSE> \
        MAXMIND_S3_BUCKET=<YOURBUCKET> \
        MAXMIND_AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID=<YOURID> \
        MAXMIND_AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY=<YOURSECRET>

Then create a docker image

    sudo docker build -t maxmind-s3-fetcher .

and launch it

    sudo docker run -d --name maxmind-s3-fetcher
