Let us see some facts with dates:

GitHub was established on February 8, 2008 (9 years ago).

Git was released on 7 April 2005 (12 years ago).

The concerned issue was formed on 13 February 2001 (16 years old).
Take a look at this mysterious issue here. This issue has been opened by Bron Gondwana on 13 February 2001 and was assigned to Ken Murchison on 13 Dec 2016 and on the same day, three labels were added java, P2 and bug. The first sign of any activity after 16 years!

The first version control is Source Code Control System which was released in 1975 that is 42 years ago as noted in this paper. Another old but operational version control system is Revision Control System which was released on 1982 that is 35 years ago.
