[minimal] Network manager does not request wifi password #28
Comments
I tested this and it works fine for me. |
Described problem does exists. Media configured to use "NetworkManager" thus you can use "nmtui" command to connect without any problem. |
Encountered this problem while trying to install Antergos. Incredibly annoying that the first thing I need to do when trying to use a supposedly easy-to-install distro is google for a fix for a problem that, apparently, has existed for months. This isn't user friendly. |
Please, state which iso did you use (minimal or live-gnome), which version, .... that is, fill a bug in a proper way. Telling us how shameful we should be about a problem is not the right way to encourage us to solve it. Cheers! |
I faced the problem on minimal iso one month ago. Just wanted to point it out. It was showing the possible connection options but couldn't connect any of these, stuck at " connecting " notification. However i was still able to connect with nmtui without problem. |
It's the same issue every time if I go by reports from other users both here and on forums. Current build (2015.11.14), minimal ISO. If you guys don't care to fix simple bugs like this, what else am I supposed to do than point out that this kind of bug isn't really acceptable for a distro that is implied to be simple and easy to use? |
I confirm that the minimal x64 version (2015.12.29) has this problem too. 'nmtui' command solved the issue, though. |
I am also having this issue, Minimal build 2016.06.14. Again, nmtui allowed me to connect. Connection was listed in network manager, but it did not allow me to edit any part of it. Did not work when attempting to connect manually via entering SSID either. |
Just to clarify, because I just ran into this issue today also. Type "nmtui" in terminal. Select "Activate a connection". Select your desired network and it will prompt you for a password. Enter password and it will connect, then you can exit. I was choosing "Edit a connection" and I was getting frustrated because it wouldn't let me edit it, but edit is the wrong way to do it. |
This is 100% reproducible on any laptop that is not connected via ethernet. As soon as you start the ISO, you can try to connect, but it won't prompt for a password. |
I have tried to reproduce this issue several times. It works fine for me. If we cannot reproduce the issue then we cannot fix it. Sorry! |
This bug is still very much alive, I would suggest you add a small line in the installer for people to use nmtui if they encounter the bug because "works for me" doesn't help (lots of) people who try the distro and then can't install it. |
Fyi: encountered it today too. Tried it with my normal wlan and for the sake of curioucity with a hotspot. Both didnt work. Its just not asking for the password and the connection clises after 20 sec or so. @willmck solution with |
Installed minimal yesterday, faced the same issue of network manager not asking for the wifi password. Had to use the good ol' LAN cable to circumvent the issue. |
This should be re-opened. Installed antergos-minimal-17.4-x86_64.iso, Openbox, dvorak keyboard layout. Network Manager does not request password or show any dialog when choosing a WiFi network. nmtui does allow me to make a connection, but does not solve the issue in the long run of Network Manager not functioning properly. |
For what it's worth, I also encountered the problem with the minimal 17.4 version. |
I'll leave it open as the issue still exists, but as @lots0logs said, if we can't reproduce the issue it's very difficult for us to fix it... any help will be happily welcomed. |
I have this bug too, I'll dump a bit of info just in case it helps. Fresh Antegos install with openbox: Hardware is an HP elitebook i5-6200U |
Happened to me also on a fresh install. Installation: antergos-minimal-17.6-x86_64.iso My hardware is custom but basically it's a J Series Celeron, nothing special. The wifi icon looked a bit corrupted and I had to use nmtui to input my password. I would suggest removing the wifi icon and just auto-starting nmtui as default when booting the minimal installation. You also won't need a mouse so it benefits accessibility users too. |
I'm surprised this hasn't been fixed I've used Antergos before and had the same issue and now that I want to use arch again it is still having the same issue a year later. I know the devs can't reproduce the same issue on their hardware so it's not worth their time and effort testing especially if there are ways to work around it and I totally understand that. Anyways I'm using the latest version of the minimal installer on a Dell e5570 and have used previous Installers on a HP 8470p, 840 G1, and Thinkpad x230 with the same issue with the wifi not connecting without having to dive into the terminal. I'm going try it again on a macbook using the same USB live installer. Btw I always use Rufus and it's latest version to make live ISOs so that's at least a constant value here. So that's 4 machines that I've had not yet counting the MacBook with the same issue. Now I'm curious what hardware everyone is using who has had success connecting to wifi automatically without having to actually open a terminal. |
Hey, just tried on a Dell Inspiron z14 and guess what? :P (BTW: used dd to put the iso on a flashdrive) |
Encountered the same issue as well using minimal on macbook pro 8.1. Well you can work around it by manually setting password in 'wifi security', but it seems a little annoying... |
all - leaving snarky comments or stating the current year aren't particularly helpful, please provide details, logs, wireless model numbers, etc to help this small team troubleshoot things. These aren't paid developers, just enthusiasts. Former team - hi :p. Had some time to play with this since I have a lot of laptops laying around. Start gnome-keyring-daemon in the minimal image, that should fix it. |
OMG! He committed straight to master! |
I faced it today in antergos.mimimal.17.10 |
4.13.3-1-ARCH |
Seems to still be present in antergos-minimal-17.12-x86_64.iso. |
seems like still present today. |
I can confirm that this bug is still present. NMTUI worked for me. This happened on a older LG laptop, model R490. I downloaded the minimal iso yesterday, antergos-minimal-18.4-x86_64.iso.. Are there any additional logs or info that I can provide? |
Same here, minimal-18.5, on Toshiba R830. The nmtui workaround indeed works, too. |
me had problem too lenovo g575 also no connection! sudo dhcpc wlp4s0 also no connection after reboot nmtui does job well! for others open terminal. then write nmtui |
Installing on Surface Book - nmtui doesn't work and neither does Network Manager. Fails with no reason given every time. I've tried editing the connection, tried removing and re-adding it. Nothing. Tried both the minimal and full installers. I was hoping to move to Antergos from Manjaro as my main system but I guess it's just not ready yet. |
Installing Antergos Minimal 19.4 @ Asus T102HA. Network Manager doesn't request the wifi password. nmtui @ terminal did the trick - works ! |
antergos-minimal-19.4-x86_64.iso does not request wifi password after you select the desired ssid |
