Taxonomy relationships error re: tribes & subfamilies #2074

See #757 and http://arctos.database.museum/info/ctDocumentation.cfm?table=CTTAXON_RELATION I don't think this is a problem; the source of the data is clearly documented, false positives are not unexpected, and the tools these data drive are exclusively for discovery where false positives are the least-evil evil. #757 (comment) is a path to prevent these; new Issue if we want to go there. A simple rule should be added to, you know, show the world we aren't fools,
that no such relationships are allowed outside of matching ranks.
That is... within a rank (eg family, subfamily, etc) two names can be
considered alternative spellings of each other, but if the ranks are
different, they can't.

I agree with Derek that the two names should be in the same rank to be considered alternative spellings. We have a similar example: Cypraeini → potential alternate spelling → Cypraeinae But both appear at their appropriate rank in the WoRMS (via Arctos) classification |
Relationships are between names. Names are not ranked. The metadata do not necessarily contain the name at all, or may re-use it in various capacities. A few thousand of these involve infraspecific rank variations. |
It sounds like you don't know if the two terms appear in the same classification, but would be something to exclude if possible. Or does your code allow you to exclude words that only differ by the ending "i" vs. "ae". That would help with the subfamily vs tribe concern that Derek raised. |
I very explicitly don't CARE about classifications for this. Classifications come and go, and those that exist contain all sorts of garbage. This is an attempt - a surprisingly successful one from my perspective - to provide a pathway to 'dark' specimens obscured by a broken system (and the occasional 'everyone accepting what some random person did a few times for some reason'). Looking at anything beyond the name is going to hinder that. ~160K names now, possibly for the first time ever, do what they are intended to do! 212,542 specimens suddenly become discoverable! There's some 'bycatch' but I think it's fairly minimal, is clearly documented, and there's a path to separate the wheat from the chaff if someone with the knowledge to do so wants to. I can add or remove patterns to the code. This one would drop at least the below, which I think are not intended to be different things. I think I may have found a workable compromise. If I don't create relationships for monomials ending in [ini/inae] and consisting only of letters, I think I'll avoid creating the most obvious "cross-rank" relationships and still get the binomials, botanical hybrids, and things that contain dashes (all of which are otherwise involved and used interchangeably so need relationships). Does that sound reasonable, and are there any other patterns I should add to this? Here's what I intend to remove relationships for. Do any of these look like anything other than 'same root, different rank'?

Sounds like an excellent solution.
There may exist some subtribes, which are monomials that end in -ina

Those 624 relationships and their reciprocals are gone, and the creator-scripts should ignore names like them in the future. I can't find any ina/ini or ina/inae related letter-only monomials - we have a path now, we can deal with them when/if they pop up. Tentatively closing.... |

Leiodinae → potential alternate spelling → Leiodini
Leiodini → potential alternate spelling → Leiodinae
In animals, subfamilies end in "-inae" and tribes (which are children of subfamilies) end in "-ini"
The above relationship assumption is erroneous - a tribe is not an alternate spelling of a subfamily. I assume since this happened here it's a widespread problem (all tribes and subfamilies are indicated as alternate spellings of each other)? In any case, it needs to be fixed with these relationships removed.
