A collection of Bash shell scripts with which you can quickly create your own Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) in the Google Cloud Platform. In your VPC you can then start various servers. Including Windows Server and SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP Developer Edition 7.52 SP04.

With this set of shell scripts you get the same setup on a small scale as with large SAP on GCP projects.

Your servers do not get public IP addresses and therefore are not accessible from the Internet. This increases the security massively. Your servers connect to the Internet via a Cloud NAT router. The whole setup is comparable to your internet connection at home. Here you are also hidden behind a NAT router.

Via the so-called Identity-Aware Proxy (IAP) you get access to your instances and can tunnel required ports to your laptop.

You can also start a Windows server with graphical desktop environment in your VPC and access your servers and SAP systems from there via Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).

Requirement

A Bash shell, Git and a few tools that are included in the standard GNU/Linux distribution. In addition, you need the Google Cloud SDK which is very easy to install.

If you don't have access to a local Bash shell or a Linux operating system, you can also use Cloud Shell. Cloud Shell already has all requirements and in your Cloud Shell Terminal you can run the scripts.

You can also use IAP Desktop to connect to the Remote Desktop of your VM instances by using IAP TCP forwarding.

Setup

Clone this repo:

You can do the whole setup with the Bash scripts. Default values can be overwritten with a configuration file config in the folder.

I recommend you to change the value of the default variable MY_GCP_SHORT_NAME. Use something unique like your name or a combination of numbers.

To do this, create a file named config in this folder:

Configuration

You can overwrite the default configuration. Just create a configuration file with the name config in this folder or in the subfolders.

Values from the configuration file in the subfolder overwrites values from the parent folder.

MY_GCP_SHORT_NAME

A short name to quickly separate project ID, network and storage bucket name.

  • Variable: MY_GCP_SHORT_NAME

By default, this name is used by the variables:

  • MY_GCP_PROJECT : Google Cloud project ID (sandbox-$MY_GCP_SHORT_NAME)
  • MY_GCP_NETWORK : Name of the Compute Engine network (network-$MY_GCP_SHORT_NAME)

FAQ

  • Q: Why shell scripts and not Ansible, Teraform, etc.?
  • A: Ansible is another dependency you need to understand as well. Most people in the SAP area already know shell scripts. Therefore shell scripts.
