Summary
There are a lot of dangling fixmes and todos in the code base, this PR attempts to resolve a fraction of them to clean house and avoid possible confusions/misunderstandings later on.
Remove typings that are no longer in use, remove outdated TODOs and FIXMEs and tasks we are unlikely to tackle.
Testing
No functional changes, app should work as before.
