Support for network of producer nodes and non-producing tracking nodes. Embodied by plugins/net_plugin/net_plugin.cpp, the basic support is in place. Functionality that remains to be implemented: caching signed transactions then purging them on a schedule. Sending summaries of blocks rather than whole blocks. Optimizing the routing between nodes. Failover during new node synchronization if a peer fails to respond timely enough.

Also need to prepare tests that are distributed, deterministic, and repeatable.

For the time being, there is a perl script, tests/p2p_tests/init/run_test.pl which is able to configure and deploy an arbitrary number of nodes. For the time being, the run_test.pl script is able to launch the requisite number of eosd instances.

usage:
tests/p2p_tests/init/run_test.pl [--nodes=<n>] [--pnodes=<n>] [--topo=<ring|star>] [--first-pause=<n>] [--launch-pause=<n>] [--duration=<n>] [--time-stamp=<time>]

where:
--nodes=n (default = 1) sets the number of eosd instances to launch
--pnodes=n (default = 1) sets the number nodes that will also be producers
--topo=s (default = ring) sets the network topology to either a ring shape or a star shape
--first-pause=n (default = 0) sets the seconds delay after starting the first instance
--launch-pause=n (default = 0) sets the seconds delay after starting subsequent nodes
--duration=n (default = 60) sets the seconds delay after starting the last node before shutting down the test
--time-stamp=s (default "") sets the timestamp in UTC for the genesis block. use "now" to mean the current time.

This issue has been in progress for 13 days, can I get an update on what has happened in those 13 days and where are the git commits that reference this issue?

The perl script mentioned above has been obsoleted by the new launcher app. The launcher is written in C++ and is capable of managing local as well as wide-area networks of eosd nodes. The document eos/testnet.md describes the theory of operation as well as launcher command line options and secondary configuration files used to customize the deployment.

However I had Matthew try it out and it took him a couple of stabs to make it right.

There are basically three modes of operation for the launcher: Prelaunch-config generator, eosd launcher, and finally eosd terminator. Perhaps it would be more clear if I made some hard links to the launcher executable then used unique program names to as a sort of master option limiter.
