Following up on #2659 and #3175, further steps toward an algorithmic
derivation of Canonical Name from App Name.

Rationale

  • encodes the existing practice for the great majority of Casks
  • such terms are not helpful in search
  • for deeper goals see the PRs referenced above

Enforcing these rules would affect 3 current Casks: time-tracker-mac.rb,
mame-os-x.rb, bitcoin-qt.rb.

Pinging @vitorgalvao; I promised to keep you in the loop on all naming issues.

BTW, there are now less than 40 link based Casks which are not perfectly named according to the CONTRIBUTING.md algorithm. (out of 1079).

At least 20 of the 40 should be straightforward to standardize by adopting rules like the above (ie, just encoding what 90% of Casks already do).

20 is a maintainable number of exceptions, so a "cask namer" script is in reach now, and I have one drafted in a private branch.

Thank you for pinging me. I agree with every point, no objections whatsoever.
