Introduction

Here is my computer configuration. For this project, I aimed to build a light but fully operating system. My computer run on ArchLinux but this should be portable on many Linux OS.

At first I created this repo for 2 reasons :

  • Keep my configuration on a remote platform (to get it back regardless of the computer from where I work)
  • Improve my git skill on a long-time project (yes it is)

If you want to advise me (about git or about any configuration), you are welcome. You can contact me on my github e-mail address.

Requirements

As the install.bash script automatically install the needed packages, it will only work with the following distributions (others should manually install the specified packages) :

  • Debian
  • ArchLinux

Send me a message if you want me to enable other distributions installation.

*Note that even if the script include Ubuntu specification, it will not work on it because of the missing commande sudo. In fact the script use the su command to install all the packages.

Installation

Warning : this script use the content the /etc/issue file on your system to determinate which package manager you are using. Don't modify this file in order to make the script work correctly.

Simply run

./install.bash

List of Applications used

  • vim
  • XMonad
  • XMobar
  • dmenu
  • livedown

(For further information, look at the repertory of this applications or in one of the next sections)

XMonad

XMonad is a lightly tiling Windows Manager (WM). Written in Haskell, it's very configurable but maybe not simplest. However you don't need to know Haskell to configure it (fortunately for me).

Applications used :

  • XMobar
  • dmenu (light app launcher bar)
  • XTerm (see the XTerm part of the README)

Livedown

Livedown is a tool for Markdown-file preview in browser. You just have to start livedown specifying it your file and your browser. It will open this file in your browser and actualize the page each time you save the file.

Installation

  • Install npm with your package manager
  • Install livedown : * npm install -g livedown *

Example

  • livedown start README.md --open --browser firefox
  • vim README.md

XTerm

XTerm is the (very light) default terminal emulator for Xorg Window System. I have choose it because it is configurable enough for me and I don't really see diference between it and other terminal emulator.

The XTerm configuration is directly made by passing parameters to the Term field in XMonad configuration.

Requirement

You need (obviously) xterm

# On ArchLinux
pacman -S xterm xorg-xrdb

Configuration

  • Colors :

    • white foreground
    • black background
  • Font :

    • Font : Deja Vu Mono
    • Size : 13
