If we backport this and the fix in Base, do we need a workaround, or are both fixes released simultaneously and we can switch signs constantly?

I see, the Base fix is not merged yet, so I guess you are planning to rerun CI when that is merged and afterward remove the temporary workarounds before merging this?

Base fix is failing due to SparseArrays, so have to merge here first, upgrade in base, then merge the fix...

# Create a new branch
git switch --create backport-260-to-1.8
# Cherry-pick the merged commit of this pull request and resolve the conflicts
git cherry-pick --mainline 1 4fb8f0eb087ed5777f9d147e451dd6069cf28997
# Push it to GitHub
git push --set-upstream origin backport-260-to-1.8
# Go back to the original working tree
cd ../..
# Delete the working tree
git worktree remove .worktrees/backport-1.8

Then, create a pull request where the base branch is 1.8 and the compare/head branch is backport-260-to-1.8.
