Remove dependency on pytest runner #171

Fixes #157 ... at least for Linux. This PR does not fix the Windows fail already happening in master and the macOS tests are broken for unrelated reasons: It downloads Python 3.9 for all three test matrix entries.

You could consider switching to tox for a proper python version test matrix. This will also help with the necessary install of the _generated modules.
