Description

Update both the operational GFSv16 and developmental GFSv17 systems to use the new RTOFSv2.4.4. "The scheduled handoff to NCO is March 11. Implementation for early June."

  • Update operational GFSv16
  • Update developmental GFSv17

Target version

v16.3.17

Expected workflow changes

Update to rtofs_ver=v2.4 in version files.

The RTOFS upgrade renames the rtofs_glo.*.cice_inst files, which the GFS does not use, so this will be a version update for rtofs_ver only since the 2nd digit changes and thus the location of RTOFS com will change.

Delayed until after the 2024 hurricane season. Will be split into two updates with the science changes coming later via v2.4.0 and other changes soon via v2.3.?. No change to the GFS for the first ops update since the 2nd digit remains the same.

From last Friday's RFC memo:

RFC 12992 - On WCOSS2, move the RTOFS v2.4.3 package to the production
ecFlow server and turn on parallel DBnet alerts in preparation for its 30-day IT
stability test. The transfer process is also being modified to handle the evaluation
data and to stop sending some NHC Guidance code to the NCO codes website.
To be implemented on July 30 from 1130Z to 1530Z.

Updates for RTOFSv2.4.3 operational upgrade (#2800)

Updates for upstream RTOFS upgrade to v2.4.3. 

A new GFS version results from this upgrade due to second digit RTOFS version
update and resulting COM path update (`../rtofs/v2.4`). No other change in this
operational upgrade.

Also some requested cleanup/decluttering of release notes.
Have deleted all older release notes and renamed most recent version
notes to `Release_Notes.md`. Future implementations will update this
same file instead of making a new file.

From September 6 RFC memo:

RFC 13216 - On WCOSS2, implement the RTOFS v2.4.4 model into operations
by removing its evaluation flag and turning on production DBnet alerts. Some of
the major highlights of this upgrade include:
● Added processing of GOES-18 data
● Added restart capability for HYCOM (Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model)
● HYCOM upgrades that mitigate HYCOM crashes and improve model stability
● Added integrity check for all netCDF and HDF5 data
To be implemented on September 10 from 1200Z to 1600Z.

Updates for RTOFSv2.4.4 operational upgrade (#2800) (#2921)

The upstream RTOFS system was upgraded to v2.4.4 on September 13th, 2024.

A new GFS (`v16.3.17`) version resulted from this upgrade due to the
second digit change (`3 -> 4`) and resulting COM path update
(`../rtofs/v2.4`). No other change in the GFS in ops for this
operational upgrade.

Also some requested cleanup/decluttering of release notes. Have deleted
all older release notes and renamed the most recent version notes to
`Release_Notes.md`. Future implementations will update this same file
instead of making a new file.
