Simplify backend configuration

At the moment, a project may have multiple backends. In the current situation this seems unnecessary and makes it more complicated than necessary to understand the relationship between projects and backends.

Projects should be limited to a single backend and the configuration setting should be changed from plural backends to singular backend.
