About

CultURIze is an open source tool for curators, collections managers and archivistis responsible for small and medium sized heritage colletions to create persistent identifiers for heritage objects and its data and images. Collection managers are in need of tools and processes to create persistent URI's for heritage objects so that knowlegde, images and webresources of cultural objects can unambiguously and persistently be identified and found on the web. Read more about persistent identifiers.

With CultURIze, persistent URI's can be made for every heritage object according to a standard protocol. It ensures that a persistent URI dereferences to the URL of the web resource of a representation of a cultural object. Web resources can be structured texts in HTML, JSON or XML format or 2D images.

CultURIze is created with the users in mind. The prototype was tested by collection managers in order to make to tool as accessible as possible to manage persistent URI's.

History

CultURIze is the successor of the Resolver.

The first version of the Resolver was created in 2014-2015 by Nils Van Geele. It was an open source Python application released under a GPLv3 license. The second version followed in 2016-2017 and was made by Pieter De Praetere.

However, the resolver had some weaknesses:

  • the installation was hard;
  • the preparation of the CSV data for the batch upload was complex and time-consuming;
  • collection managers neglected the tool and didn't use it;
  • for the PACKED staff, the tool was insufficient to raise awareness about persistent URIs.

That's why a simple, well-functioning tool was needed. CultURIze was developend by four students during Open Summer of Code 2018. The tool must integrate better with the work processes of collection managers. Collection managers were actively involved in testing the application.

Goals

With CultURIze:

  • Collection managers can create, manage and share knowlegde, information and data about heritage objects
  • Developers have access to reliable data about heritage objects
  • The Flemish government can make Flemish heritage sustainably accessible in a networked infrastructure
  • PACKED wants to digitize and optimize the work processes within cultural organizations in order to connect them to the new digital reality

Development

CultURIze started as a prototype created by four students of Open Summer of Code 2018 - Marie Devos, Pierre van Houtryve, Milena Vergara Santiago, Bert Schoovaerts - and their coach Brecht Van de Vyvere. In 2019, it has been further developed into a stable tool by Maxim Deuze, Douwe De Bock and PACKED employees Nastasia Vanderperren and Lode Scheers.
