What is DialogueScript?

DialogueScript is a domain-specific language designed for use in graph-based dialogue systems (cutscenes, conditions, state change, etc.). It is meant to be translated directly into C# or C++ for use with Unity or Unreal Engine based games.

This repository contains the DialogueScript language specification in the form of two .g4 files which are used by ANTLR to generate a lexer and a parser.

DialogueScript is not meant to be a general purpose programming language. There are no loops, no type definitions, no function defintions, and there is no direct memory allocation. These scripts are meant to interacting with code thats already defined in your game. That's where the heavy lifting should go.

Quick Start

  • Install antlr4-tools following these directions.
  • Run the following command to generate a DialogueScript lexer and parser written in Java:
antlr4 ./grammar/DialogueScriptLexer.g4 ./grammar/DialogueScriptParser.g4 -o java/generated

You can also generate lexers and parsers for any of ANTLR's supported target languages (Ex: C#, Java, Python, JavaScript, etc.). Here's an example for C#:

antlr4 -Dlanguage=CSharp ./grammar/DialogueScriptLexer.g4 ./grammar/DialogueScriptParser.g4 -o csharp/generated

From here, you would have to write your own listener or visitor using the generated lexer and parser. This respository will (or already does) contain a listener for csharp (which could be used for Unity projects).

Examining a Parse Tree

Run the following to view a graphical representation of the parse tree generated from the included example script (example_script.ds):

antlr4-parse ./grammar/DialogueScriptLexer.g4 ./grammar/DialogueScriptParser.g4 script example_script.ds -gui
