fixes #306
Adds the updates to the editorconfig discussed in the issue. Once the changes have been committed it would be great if you could add a code clean up commit to the branch yourself because it makes changes in a bunch of files and will therefore have the best effect being merged into the main branch immediately to avoid conflicts from other changes.
