  1. The add-on does nothing how do I use it?
    • The add-on only runs when a valid winmail.dat file is detected as an attachment. No user interaction is required to convert these files.
  2. Will this damage the email?
    • Lookout only decodes and temporarily displays the decoded files. No permanent changes are done to the email file itself.
  3. I can't open one specific email
    • There are currently known issues with decoding some media files resulting in a application/octet-stream mime. Manually decoding with another tool such as tnef available on linux or on windows through Cygwin is not currently known to work on these files, however is always recommended.
  4. Are there any known incompatible plugins?
    • Lookout is known to be incompatible with Thunderbird conversations
    • Full lightning integration is currently missing i.e. accept/decline/tentative buttons see: #46
  5. Why is the winmail.dat file in the attachments pane?
    • The winmail.dat is available to store in case there are decoding issues and you wish to download and store the original data file. As of the 1.3.00 Beta release this will be optional.

Known issues

These are some known, long term hard to fix issues.

  1. Lookout currently doesn't work when opening email in a new window. See: #50.
  2. Lightning's Accept/Decline buttons are not displayed when an event invite is present. Open the .ics file directly to add to your calendar. See: #46
  3. Lookout doesn't work with encrypted emails.
