Why are my widgets not showing (css branch)?

I must admit I am having a rough time getting off the ground with the new css branch code. Many of the fundamentals are different now, so my old code (based on main) doesn't convey well at all.

Right now I am just trying to build things from the ground up. I have been able to get a Tabs widget to render, but that is about it. TBH It's not even clear to me if async is still required...the tabs.py example file doesn't mention async. I would next like to add in a text bar across the top that would carry some customized text (ansi-coded), and a footer along the bottom. I have defined the widgets but I can't seem to get them to render/appear. Is someone here well-versed in the new way of doing things on the css branch?

OK, well I finally found the mount method in the App class, so at least my widgets are showing up on screen. I still have to figure out how the whole layout thing works and how to get individual widgets placed where I want them.
