Known Issues

There are a few Known Issues

  • It is possible that certain updates will show "InProgress" in the Result column even though they were successfully installed, and the machine has been rebooted. Those updates will have HResult code 0x80242014 which translates to WU_E_UH_POSTREBOOTSTILLPENDING "The post-reboot operation for the update is still in progress." This persists over multiple reboots. This appears to happen only when running Windows 10. Windows 11 doesn't seem to be subject to this bug.

  • Update history is reset when a Windows upgrade is installed. On my machine, once Windows 11 22H2 was installed, all previous update history was unavailable.

  • Certain methods to "repair" Windows Update problems can remove all the update history available to Windows Update Viewer. Deleting files or folders under Windows\SoftwareDistibution seems to be the culprit.

  • The total number of updates shown in Windows Update Viewer will not necessarily match what is shown in Update History in the Settings app. For example, on my machine, Update History shows 50 "Definition Updates" for Defender and Windows Update Viewer shows over 700. Microsoft probably has a legitimate reason for capping the number of updates shown.
