What

  • There are cases where some pods, at times, does not have last transition time. For example:-
$ kubectl -n airbyte -L airbyte -l airbyte=worker-pod --field-selector status.phase!=Running get pods -o=jsonpath='{range .items[*]} {.metadata.name} {.status.phase} {.status.conditions[0].lastTransitionTime}{"\n"}{end}'|grep -v Z$
 destination-pubsub-sync-572859-0-wrfgr Failed
 destination-pubsub-sync-572861-0-bygvs Failed
 destination-pubsub-sync-572864-0-dixyn Failed
 destination-pubsub-sync-577924-0-hooqf Failed
 destination-pubsub-sync-577925-0-nhwne Failed
 destination-pubsub-sync-577932-0-slmtg Failed
  • This will make the pod-sweeper script throw errors on parsing date part from such lines.

How

  • Handle this gracefully by taking current time as default in case its missing from kubectl. We cannot delete the pod anyway without time and taking current time will definitely skip deleting it but without any errors.

Interesting. Do you notice any pattern with the pods you are seeing not having transition timestamps?

I was not looking specifically for that, I will keep an eye out. We use preemptible vm instances for all worker jobs, probably a contributing factor but cannot say for sure.
