Upstream's master was changed enough that I couldn't just merge it and resolve conflicts. Instead, I pulled fresh from upstream/master, then tried to apply some thread safety w/
concurrentandmonitorlike we had in our branch. Then I had to redo the allocations specs and they're still super fragile and trash, but not sure how far we want to divert from upstream.
