Hyperhdr on Raspberrypi P Zero 2W with WS2812B Led strip

Hello everyone,
I know there are probably other threads on this topic, but from what I understand, every setup has its own challenges. A few months ago, I came across an old video on YouTube that made it look very easy to create your own Ambilight system. So, I bought everything used in that video:

A 5-meter WS2812B LED strip with 60 LEDs per meter
A Raspberry Pi Zero 2W
A video splitter
A video grabber
A 5V 12A power supply
I installed version 16 of HyperHDR on my Raspberry Pi, followed the guide for connections, and set up the settings correctly via the HyperHDR portal. However, the LEDs never turned on, and the video grabber was never recognized.

I’ve tried updating HyperHDR to all available versions and am currently using the latest beta. I’ve read that these LEDs are not supported by the software unless used with root access or an ESP32. I tried using root, but still couldn’t get the LEDs to light up.

Now, I’m thinking of using an ESP32 (which I have, and I can share a photo of all the accessories I bought), but I’m not sure where to start. I’d like to avoid damaging any of the components, so I’m asking for your help.

For now, I’ll share photos of everything I purchased. Unfortunately, I’ve only now realized that many of the items I bought are not ideal for this project, but with your help, I hope to avoid wasting too much of what I already have.

rp2040 is better and cheaper than esp32 for USB cable connection. For few more bucks there are rp2040 with a built-in level shifter: https://github.com/awawa-dev/HyperSerialPico?tab=readme-ov-file#recommended-boards-with-a-built-in-level-shifter

For SD card installer use official RPi Imager: select custom image and then our SD image from the location where you downloaded it earlier. You previous HyperHDR will be erased on SD but it doesnt work anyway.

I followed your instructions and installed the RaspberryPiOS-P010-hdr-os-image-bookworm-aarch64.img.xz on my SD card. After inserting the SD card into my Raspberry Pi, I couldn’t access the configuration portal. I’m wondering if I might have chosen the wrong package, but it was the only option available when trying to select a custom OS. However, I can access it via SSH. It’s likely that I’m missing some code or commands that I don’t know.

I can't access the server via the Raspberry Pi's IP address (e.g., http://192.---.-.--:8090/), even though I can access it through the terminal. How can I resolve this issue?

I'm not sure. I only found the information contained in the photo.

I'll try to activate root using the following commands:
ssh to raspberry
sudo systemctl disable --now hyperhdr@pi
sudo systemctl enable --now hyperhdr@root
sudo reboot

If it doesn't work, I'll try this:
Try remove the service first:
sudo systemctl stop hyperhdr@pi.service
sudo systemctl disable hyperhdr@pi
It's better to reboot then.
And create service for root:
sudo systemctl enable hyperhdr@root
and again reboot to make sure it will start.
At each step you can verify user for the HyperHDR's process with ps:
ps -ef
P.S. I'm looking to buy an RP2040. Which model from the link you posted would you recommend for the easiest setup? Regards

You probably have ms2109 or ms2130 already: #1052 (reply in thread) check it using macos using for example FaceTime. If it works then the USB adapter is problem because there is no enough space next to the power supply input.

What video source is connected to this grabber input? If the grabber would be faulty then macos would not detect it. Keep in mind that it's HDMI1.4 grabber and usually does not support 4k60 or HDCP.

BTW on the first picture in the topic there is probably UGreen CM217. If I'm right it is not a HDMI splitter but just a HDMI switch.

Yes, I have a Ugreen CM217 that supports both HDR and HDCP, but unfortunately, it's just a switch—I mistakenly thought switches and splitters were the same thing.

At this point, I connected my grabber (a 2130) directly to the TV, but it didn’t work.
I also swapped out the HDMI cable, but nothing changed.

Finally, I tried a direct connection with my Mac, and something seems to work. I’m attaching a photo.
Since it works with a different source, I believe the grabber is fine, and the issue must be with either the source or the switch.

So, I definitely need to buy a splitter. I read that the EZCOO one should be a good fit for me, but could you recommend one just in case? Thanks, and sorry for the trouble!

TV is not a video source, but you can connect to theRPI instead if you have a hdmi adapter.

And this is probably an effect of this kernel bug. Try to display solid red or blue or green board and it will be visible at once.
