See bazelbuild#16654 for details. - `cquery --output=files` also outputs source files. Closes bazelbuild#16602. - `--incompatible_strict_conflict_checks` is flipped to true. See bazelbuild#16729 for details. - This changes the behavior of Python version in exec/host configuration. Mitigation is to set Python version on the targets. - `--features` only applies to targets built in the target configuration, and `--host_features` is used for the host / exec configuration (gated behind `--incompatible_use_host_features`) Fixes bazelbuild#13839 Closes bazelbuild#16626. New features: - The aquery and cquery commands now respect the --query_file flag just like the query command. Important changes: - The new path variable `$(rlocationpath ...)` and its plural form `$(rlocationpaths ...)` can be used to expand labels to the paths accepted by the `Rlocation` function of runfiles libraries. This is the preferred way to access data dependencies at runtime and works on all platforms, even when runfiles are not enabled (e.g., on Windows by default). Work towards bazelbuild#16124 Fixes bazelbuild#10923 Closes bazelbuild#16428. - Starlark `print()` statements are now emitted iff the line of code is executed. They are no longer replayed on subsequent invocations unless the Starlark code is re-executed. Additionally, multiple identical `print()` statements (same string from the same line of code, e.g. from a loop) are all emitted and no longer deduplicated. - Fixes a bug where some compilation flags would not be applied to a cc_test - Added a `native.package_relative_label()` function, which converts a label string to a Label object in the context of the calling package, in contrast to `Label()`, which does so in the context of the current .bzl file. Both functions now also accept relative labels such as `:foo`, and are idempotent. - Adds coverage metric support to android_local_test - Fixed an issue where WORKSPACE and WORKSPACE-loaded .bzl files couldn't see the Bzlmod root module's mappings when Bzlmod is enabled. - Added `native.module_name()` and `native.module_version()` to allow BUILD macro authors to acquire information about which Bazel module the current repo is associated with. - `@foo` labels can now be used on the command line as the top-level target (that is, `bazel build @foo` now works). Double-dot syntax is now forbidden (`bazel build ../foo` will no longer work). - Added preliminary support for a lockfile for Bzlmod. It's disabled by default; use `--lockfile_mode=update` to enable it. This lockfile contains only Bazel module information; it does not involve module extensions. - Added a new `max_compatibility_level` attribute to the `bazel_dep` directive, which allows version selection to upgrade a dependency up to the specified compatibility level. Co-authored-by: Brentley Jones <github@brentleyjones.com> - `--experimental_remote_grpc_log` has been renamed to `--remote_grpc_log` Closes bazelbuild#18180. Hi @oliviernotteghem thanks for the PR. Did you mean to send this against a different branch (perhaps master or the latest release branch)? |
We use 6.2.0 internally, so I based this PR on that branch. I don't think it would be hard to rebase it on master - but it would require additional testing. |
Could you please send this against master? Someone from the team will review it. |
@oliviernotteghem Thanks for sharing your prototype! I'm wondering if you could leverage the distinction between tool and non-tool inputs (see https://github.com/bazelbuild/bazel/blob/master/src/main/java/com/google/devtools/build/lib/actions/Spawn.java#L87) to determine which files to scrub from the key without explicitly passing in a list of path prefixes. This does require all of the involved actions to properly separate their inputs (i.e., by passing them via |
We do have couple of internal binary targets we use to preprocess inputs before calling android rules and they are registered as tools but if we completely remove tools from key computation then changes to these targets won't be picked up as well, no? I think there is still value in having a allowlist/denylist to let consumers configure per their needs with default being removing all tools. |

Similar to #15638 if we use regex here, it could simplify declaration when we have lot of inputs to exclude.
That's a fair point, but I'm wondering if we could get away with making a decision purely based on the action mnemonic. That is, for a given mnemonic, we either exclude all of the tool inputs from the key or none of them. (The rationale being that asking the user to specify a list of mnemonics is less brittle than a list of input paths/regexes.) @arunkumar9t2 Would such a restriction be acceptable for your use case? |

This PR introduces a set of --experimental_remote_scrub_* flags that can be used to scrub platform-dependent data from the key used to retrieve and store action results from a remote or disk cache, so that actions executing on different platforms but targeting the same platform may be able to share cache entries. This is a simplified implementation of one of the ideas described in [1], highly influenced by Olivier Notteghem's earlier proposal [2], intended to provide a simple yet flexible API to enable further experimentation. It must be used with care, as incorrect settings can compromise build correctness. This PR introduces the --experimental_remote_scrubbing_config flag, which can be used to scrub platform-dependent data from the key used to retrieve and store action results from a remote or disk cache This way, actions executing on different platforms but targeting the same platform may be able to share cache entries. To avoid flag proliferation and make for a nicer API, the scrubbing parameters are supplied via an external file in text proto format. The goal of this PR is to provide a (temporary) working solution for x-platform cache population for android project, and give an example of a possible approach we may want to use in official version of Bazel. This solution is simple, but can compromise Bazel correctness if not used properly. Please use at your own risk and make sure you understand the possible impact of ignoring action's input (which can be mitigated by using 'salt' introduced in this PR too).
Context
Most companies use linux machines for CI. However, developers often use Darwin machines. Since Bazel artifacts are platform-specific, in order for developers to get cache hits from remote Bazel cache, additional CI jobs need to be re-run on Darwin platform in order to populate the cache for developers with Darwin-specific artifacts. Doing so is costly: x2 computation and CI jobs, it requires additional hardware (i.e a fleet of darwin CI machines) and double storage capacity on Bazel remote server (to store artifacts for both darwin and linux).
This diff allows to share artifacts between darwin (M1) and linux, and enable populating cache from linux CI machines. It's somehow a hack, but given the significants savings, it sounds reasonable to use for other companies - hence sharing this PR which is not meant to be merged under its current form.
How does it work
The changes in this PR enables removing (platform dependent) input(s) from Bazel remote cache key computation. By doing so, action key hash computation can now give same result on different platforms, enabling storing/retrieving platform-independent artifacts (*) from different platform. This PR has been tested on Darwin M1<>Linux sharing, but could be re-used (with a few lines) to share artifacts also between Darwin x86 <> Darwin M1
Also, this diff leverages logic from --experimental_platform_in_output_dir option, to path input/output paths platform-agnostic.
(*) platform independent artifacts can be verified via Bazel execution logs, which include the path/hash of produced artifacts. In the case of android project, the vast majority of artifacts are indeed platform independant (jar, jdeps, etc.)
Limitations
By removing some legitimates input from action key computation, some action might not re-run if these get changes. This happens for instance when bumping JDK or Android SDK version. This can be mitigated by always bumping manually for now new salt, which will re-hash all actions. Or improving this PR to extracting JDK/SDK version and use these as input hash.
The same goes for action inputs that are ignored. However, this are less critical : usually these don't change alone (i.e other input will change during rule or version bump, which will re-compute actions) AND these ignored inputs can be fixed as they should be matching on different platform (they currently don't because these include platform specific metadata that can be removed from JARs). Ideally, this list can be suppressed by changing how these inputs are built.
