Why I'm doing this: in March 2015, my girlfriend's mother was kept 15 days in prison without trial or accusation

My goals: make the Great Firewall of China GFW block Stack Overflow pages where I have posted, in order to make Chinese programmers:

  • mad and demand direct elections, freedom of speech and human rights
  • talk to me, so I can gather pro-freedom contacts and better understand China: Twitter or Github.
  • Public contact preferred, even if anonymous. If you really need privacy, ciro.santilli.contact [at] gmail.com
  • less efficient and work less well for the Dictatorship"

I'm am sorry if this affects you negatively personally. I love China and its people. But I believe that it is the best in the long run. Your government exploits and lies to you way more than democracies do.

Hi, hope this post finds you well.

I came across your profile on S/O and follow your links to here. I am very sorry for what happened to your girlfriend's family, because I believe in freedom of religions and everyone deserves a fair trail.

But your reaction to this, adding sensitive keywords to S/O, expressing opinions whether you know the true meanings or not trying to trigger the GFW/Censorship in China and make Chinese programmers 'mad', IMHO, is not rational and to some extend childish, even with what happened to your girlfriend.

I hope you had time to read the guidelines for S/O: http://stackoverflow.com/help/be-nice, where it specifically says, and I quote:

Bigotry of any kind. Language likely to offend or alienate individuals or groups based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc. will not be tolerated. At all. (Those are just a few examples; when in doubt, just don't.)

Sure you are doing favors for your girlfriend and possibly other people who might also in similar situation, but ...

What about ordinary professionals who just want to enjoy/contribute to knowledge base like S/O?

What about S/O, for taking a risk losing all visits from China?

What about other users on S/O, for loosing all the inputs from Chinese professionals in the future because they don't get to visit S/O?

You want justice but you are not really doing justice to others. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO DO SO

I also hope you keep an open mind to things you might not have chances to truly understand, since you don't live in China (I assume). There's also a term called confirmation bias, where people tend to filter information they gathered in favor to what they believed in. I hope this is not the case. Read more books, read books on both sides, talk to people on both sides and please quote evidences to support your own acts.

Hi suzker,

Thanks for you reply!

The fact that you had any action and replied, already reached my goal: increasing awereness.

YOU HAVE NOT RIGHT TO DO SO.

If you think so, please open an issue on meta: http://meta.stackexchange.com/ for the community to decide.

I don't think I'm alienating anyone (except the Chinese dictatorship), on the contrary, I'm fighting for a more inclusive society.

Same goes for example for the change of color on the SO log supporting gay rights: http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/297859/can-stack-overflow-and-metas-logos-be-changed-temporarily-to-the-loveoverflow

but what about ordinary professionals who just want to enjoy/contribute to knowledge base like S/O?

If those people sit idly without helping their neighbours, then I do want to reach them.

I know its not so simple: it takes a lot of courage to risk your life and family to help someone else. Maybe I don't have it. I don't blame them. I just want to raise their awareness to make the communists weaker.

Don't worry, SO it not going to be blocked. And even it it is, it will not affect the programmer community because you can all use wall jumping, or will develop better wall jumping.

The communists don't want to block sites: its bad popularity. If we force them to, we hurt them.

confirmation bias,

Yes, that is very hard to bipass, and everyone has it.

When it comes to those political questions, not matter how much you research, it's hard to change your mind, much like religion.

I acknowledge I may be wrong.

That said, I do try to keep a list of all arguments, pro and con and an open mind. I if you have any that I haven't seen, let me know.

If a source is linked to China government or FLG, I try to mark it clearly. Of course, many Chinese consider any foreign media anti-chinese... maybe that is half true... but I'm sure every Chinese media is 100% pro-commie :-)

Cheers!
