How might we provide an obvious way for readers to switch languages that looks good with the visual design?

Here is an option inspired by the affordance used on the UN website (http://www.un.org/en)

Here is an option showing links in the footer. This would ideally be combined with a script that detects the language of the reader's browser and automatically selects the matching language (if that language is an option, default would probably be English).
