Practical information about the Summer School

Getting to the venue and away from it

  • The venue is Hotelli Nuuksio, address Naruportintie 68, Espoo.

  • The airport to fly in is the Helsinki International (HEL). From there you can take the airport train (38 min) to the Helsinki city center.

  • On Tuesday, June 25, there will be a charter bus to the venue that leaves from Mikonkatu 19 (in Rautatientori ), near the Helsinki central railway station, at 9:00. The bus should have a "CSC summer school" sign visible somewhere.

  • A bus back to Helsinki city on the last day (July 4) leaves from the venue at 13:15 and it takes an hour at the most for it to reach Helsinki city. Plan your travel accordingly.

  • It is also possible to get to the venue on your own; public transportation works quite well. Plan your travel at https://reittiopas.fi.

  • There is parking space for those who arrive with their own car.

Registration

  • The registration to summer school will open at 9:30.

  • At 11.00 am the registration will be closed and we will kick off the school with a briefing session. People arriving later will get their room keys, materials etc when they arrive.

  • Helsinki region natives arriving to the venue on their own (i.e. those having flexibility on their arrival) are asked to show up at any other time than at the arrival of the bus from Helsinki city (at around 09:45).

  • Registration to the hotel will be done at the arrival at the venue.

What things to pack?

  • The day temperature will be around 20 degrees Celsius, give or take 5 degrees - dress accordingly. Bringing an umbrella and/or a rain coat will not be a totally bad idea. Neither will a sunscreen. Check the weather forecast before departure e.g. at https://en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/local-weather/espoo/nuuksio?forecast=long

  • There will be no dress code whatsoever for the school or any of the social events; please have a relaxed outfit.

  • See the agenda (and the notes about sports below) for the nature of the instructed sports sessions and bring suitable outfit, i.e. both outdoor and indoor sport shoes and clothing will be needed. Bring some sort of water bottle with you too.

  • Towels and linen will be provided by the venue. However, according to previous years' experience, an additional towel may come handy (just one won't get dry between the afternoon sports and evening saunas, for instance).

  • The venue is by a lake, remember a swimming suit.

  • Check at https://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plug-voltage-by-country/ whether the Finnish electricity plug is similar to yours, and bring a converter if needed.

  • There may be some mosquitoes around (not dangerous in any manner, only annoying). Taking some antihistamine daily will help in reducing the itching of the bites. Consider bringing some repellent if you are really annoyed by those buggers.

  • Smokers: there is no place anywhere near the venue to buy cigarettes

  • Food/drinks: there will be plenty of food served throughout the summer school. Note that there are only limited opportunities to purchase extra drinks etc. (e.g. for sport or evening activities), so if you think you need any extra supplies, consider bringing them with you. We will have a lounge with a small kitchen in our dedicated use. The kitchen features a fridge, water boiler and a coffee maker.

  • Announced special diets have been communicated to the venue, but if you are unsure with anything, just contact us.

Lightning talks

On the first day of the school (June 25) the floor will be yours to present your research interests for other attendees. Prepare a lightning talk, 1 minute / 1 slide sharp, about yourself and/or what are you working on. Please mind the very much varied background of the attendees, having HPC as the only common denominator. We will be listening to these on Tuesday evening.

Bring entertainment for the spare time

  • Board, card, role-playing etc games - there will be a lot of good company around for playing them.

Sports

Doing sports is an important theme of the school. Please participate actively in the sports sessions in the agenda and try out sport activities you are not familiar with yet!

In addition to the instructed sports sessions in the agenda, you have plenty of other possibilities.

  • There are very nice jogging and mountain biking routes. (Mountain bikes not provided; just if you happen to own one and you live in the Helsinki region you may want to consider bringing it with you.)
  • The hotel has fields and provides accessories for various activities, football, basketball, frisbee golf, rowing, swimming and also some board games.

Miscellaneous

  • Most common credit cards should work ok in the Helsinki Metropolitan area.

  • Note that you can't buy tickets for public transportation with cash or on the bus/train/tram! Tickets can be purchased in advance from the HSL app, HSL ticket dispensers (located all around Helsinki and near train stations) or at R-kiosks. More details about public transportation in Helsinki area.

  • There will be no insurances for the participants (e.g. to cover expenses of injuries during sport, sauna evenings, or due to general exhaustion), ensure you have one if you feel needing it.

  • Last, but not least: Clean your desk before departing to the school! The school will be very intensive so you really want to minimize the time spent on duties you drag with you from your office. Either your learning experience or the work you think you would be doing during the school will suffer (probably both).
