Use hotkeys as in the Broadcast industry, where the operator use a Jog. The hotkeys are handled also if the focus in on controlbar. Up and down arrow seek 1 second ahead and backward.

arrow seek 1 second ahead and backward.
Set left and right arrow to step for a frame (40ms for PAL, 33ms for NTSC) and you got a broadcast-style jog.
To show the timecode in broadcast-style you can use the videojs-timecode plugin: hh:mm:ss:ff
