Terminology
A process in BPMN that does not involve collaboration is referred to as a "business process-internal activity". In BPMN terminology, such a process is also referred to as a "private process". This means that the process takes place within an organization or part of an organization and does not require interaction with external parties.
A process in BPMN that is associated with a collaboration and participants is referred to as a "public process". In a public process, different parties or organizations interact with each other to achieve a common goal. This is in contrast to a private process, which takes place exclusively within an organization.
A process in BPMN that comprises several pools and therefore several separate processes is referred to as a "collaboration diagram". A collaboration diagram can contain several pools, with each pool representing an independent process. These pools are linked together by message flows or connections to represent the interaction between the processes. Such a diagram enables the modelling of complex business scenarios in which several parties or organizations are involved.
A process in which different pools are supposed to interact with each other but are collapsed is referred to as a "closed collaboration" in BPMN. In a closed collaboration, the details of the interaction between the pools are hidden within a single diagram area, which can be represented as a pool or black box. This enables a higher level of abstraction and facilitates the representation of complex processes without revealing the details of the internal processes.
