Reproduction:

> dotnet new wasmconsole
using System;
using System.Runtime.InteropServices;

public unsafe class Program
{
    public static void Main()
    {
        nint fptr = Marshal.GetFunctionPointerForDelegate(new Action(() => Console.WriteLine("Managed method callee")));
        ((delegate* unmanaged<void>)fptr)();
    }
}
> dotnet run

Expected result: no crash.

I don't think that it matters here, but isn't GC.KeepAlive required to keep the delegate alive?

Yes, in actual code one needs to keep the delegate alive explicitly.

This particular crash is caused by a failure to obtain the managed method associated with a native to managed wrapper. However, even if we were to fix this, the testcase couldn't possible work on wasm interp nowadays. This is because, in order to obtain a ftnptr for entering execution of a method with interpreter, we require a thunk that receives all arguments of the call and calls into interpreter while passing an additional argument, the interp method to execute. Currently, these thunks are generated during app compilation, by build tasks in PInvokeTableGenerator.cs, only for methods with UnmanagedCallersOnly attribute. Given Marshal.GetFunctionPointerForDelegate requires a delegate, which I don't think can be created for a method with UnmanagedCallersOnly attribute, this API can't work on wasm interp.

I think a fix for this would be to completely stop relying, if possible, on the pinvoke table generator and always generate these thunks on the fly with the wasm jit support. Was this already brought into discussion ? @lewing @kg

I think I've raised the possibility of jitting trampolines for this in browser WASM before but we've never had a discussion about whether to do it or when.

It seems like we could do it on android too (do we already?) but couldn't do it on iOS or wasi.

There are some separate issues here:

  1. we're running strlen on a null string instead of throwing PNSE like it used to
  2. on browser we could jit trampolines, should we?
  3. on wasi we could do something terrible hacks with preallocating pools by signature if we really needed to

I would definitely like to fix 1.

Make the association between the wasm_native_to_interp_ftndescs generation and the lookup from unmanaged more robust so that we don't see problems like #107212 where the same slot was being reused for multiple methods with different signatures. To do this we change the Key(s) we use and fix the string escaping it relies on, and attempt to lookup by token first.

Next , we rewrite the C code generation to make it easier to read and modify and mitigate some potentially negative memory side effects of that we introduce a gratuitous custom text writer that understands the idea of concatenated strings and use that where possible when building the output.

Next, we change the import code generation to use binary rather than linear search for both the module and symbol. And finally, we update the ICall table generation to use the extensions.

    Fix reflection-calling `Set` method on arrays (dotnet#107529)

    The test added in dotnet#106787 found an issue in the implementation of reflection calls to array `Set` methods. We used to throw the wrong exception type. There were probably other corner case bugs (like what exception is thrown when both element type is wrong and index is out of range and when/how value coercion should happen). This should fix that.

Make the association between the wasm_native_to_interp_ftndescs generation and the lookup from unmanaged more robust so that we don't see problems like dotnet#107212 where the same slot was being reused for multiple methods with different signatures.

I need to verify that this throws an exception rather than crashing now.
