Do not load global state when deleting a snapshot #29278
Do not load global state when deleting a snapshot #29278
Conversation
When deleting a snapshot, it is not necessary to load and to parse the global metadata of the snapshot to delete. Now indices are stored in the snapshot metadata file, we have all the information to resolve the shards files to delete. This commit removes the readSnapshotMetaData() method that was used to load both global and index metadata files. Test coverage should be enough as SharedClusterSnapshotRestoreIT already contains several deletion tests. Related to elastic#28934

Can you also add a test similar as for the previous PR where the global metadata is corrupted but you can still delete the snapshot?

before, it was possible to even do the deletion when snapshot was null here (i.e. the file could not be read)?

I might have not correctly read the previous code but when the snapshot metadata cannot be read, snapshot
was null and indices
was an empty list. So the index files were not deleted. This behavior is kept in this pull request, the snapshot != null just make it more obvious (I think).

right, I misread the code.
Thanks for spotting this missing test. I added one. |

This pull request follows #28934.
When deleting a snapshot, it is not necessary to load and to parse the global metadata of the snapshot to delete. Since indices are stored in the snapshot metadata file, we can obtain the UUID that the index has in the snapshot to delete, and then use it along with the snapshot UUID to read the index metadata file and finally to resolve the shards files to delete.
This commit removes the
readSnapshotMetaData()
method that was used to load both global and index metadata files. Test coverage should be enough as SharedClusterSnapshotRestoreIT already contains several deletion tests. This pull request also removes some logic for snapshot with unknown version but I consider that this code is now obsolete and it was also untested.Related to #28934
