Some of our users have large amounts of layers for their maps. It would be helpful to be able to group them into a tree view in order to perform actions (show / hide) across all layers within a particular group. It would make it much easier to traverse through maps with large amounts of layers.

I have no preference on tree view vs other implementation scheme, but I agree it'd be handy to toggle different sets of layers to achieve different analysis—or "next step"—on the same map.

For the flight data I often play with, I have a set of layers that provide more real-time views with a high level heatmap and on zoom just the last known location of a flight displayed on the map along with a short flight track. After finding an interesting flight, the next step is to see all the flight markers for that flight and/or the full track at all zoom levels. So, I'd need to disable the heat map and last flight marker layers and enable the all flight markers layer.
