I am NOT a Number

Points of Control

The Web 2.0 event raised warning bells how a few dominant internet giants are hoovering up data:

  • search data & resulting purchase - your intentions and decision points;
  • social graph - identity, activity stream and connections;
  • content & interest signals - mining ambient intimacy for who consumes what/when;
  • location - opportune timing for impulse purchases.

The social web centralises control into a few chokepoints (identity, DNS, payment, etc) which has lead to criticism of Surveillance Capitalism. This goes against software/security best practices like:

  1. fault isolation
  2. graceful degradation;
  3. human centric design.

Web 3.0

What will Web 3.0 based around semantic content, visual computing and blockchain be different?

  • machine readable content (metadata, microformats) to guide navigation;
  • reduced cognitive load via more intuitive interfaces and interactive engagement;
  • read-write-EXECUTE web with quasi-autonomous software agents acting for users.

How is up to pioneers such as MetaGamers to decide.
