Hypermedia Applications - Team AEGI

Implementation Project for the course "Hypermedia Applications (Web and Multimedia)", Polytechnic University of Milan, A.Y. 2021/2022.

The project consists in implementing a website dedicated to a touristic place, that we have called Towny.

Installation Instruction

To have a functioning site is necessary to set the environment variable DATABASE_URL with the database url.

Implementation and Best Practices

The Web Application is based on the frameworks NuxtJS v2 and Vue 2. None of the new features of Vue 3 were added in the project.
We also did not use TypeScript, since in the older versions of Vue/Nuxt does not have native support.

We did not need to use any kind of Global State Management library, such as Vuex.

As Back-End, we used the integrated server of Nuxt.js, interfacing with the PostgreSQL database through PostGraphile that provides GraphQL style REST API. GraphQL offers the advantage of querying connected data easily, while still retrieving only the information we need, in order to keep the response as small as possible. More the query sintax mirrors the structure of the response so that it is easier for all contributors to know how to address the returning data.

For the styling of pages and components, we used Bootstrap served by CDN, as well as hand-written CSS code.

All the images are provided by the asset folder in WEBP format and accurately resized; we have chosen not to distribute them from a CDN, considering the scope of the project.

As regards the hosting of the website, we tested both Server Side Rendering on Heroku and Static Site Generation on GitHub Pages.
Out of the two, we decided to publish the implementation with SSG for the evaluation. But even the SSR version on Heroku was perfectly running.
In any case, we figured SSG is applicabile due to the nature of this website, in which we assume the state of the database is not subject to continuous changes.

We also used Heroku to host a shared PostgreSQL database with the purpose of having the same updated datasource for every contributor.

Best Practices

The choice of SSG for rendering is beneficial for two purposes: firstly, it allows better SEO compared to CSR; on the other hand, the website is rendered only once at build time, unlike SSR, in which it is rendered at each client request.

We followed the best practices of Nuxt by calling all the APIs from the asyncData method, to respect the framework behavior and to be able to generate the static version of the website. All the inbound links are managed by the component NuxtLink.

In case of an empty fetch the error interface provided by Nuxt is used.

We used the routing by file system provided by the framework.

SEO

For improving the SEO we followed all the best practices suggested by the chrome DevTools. Moreover we registered the site to the google search console to keep track of the indexing, the status of the website in the search results and what is the code read by the crawler.

We are not providing a robots.txt file, since we are ok with all the site being crawled.

We know that providing a sitemap of the website would help to improve the quality of the crawling but we did not consider it in the scope of the project.

For each Event and Point Of Interest we provided the relative schema.org structured data to help Google create rich search results for the website.

Project folder structure

The project was organized in the following directories:

assets

The assets directory contains all the images in WebP format, used for the content of the website. In the subdirectories, each image starts with the id of the corresponding element.

  • events - Images displayed dynamically in the single events.

  • maps - Images that represent the routes of each itinerary. These images are only used for thumbnails, since the respective details pages already use real maps.

  • pois - Images displayed dynamically in the single points of interests.

  • services - Images displayed dynamically for each service. For each service, there is one representative image, and images for the list of specific services of that type.

Images in the subdirectories that contain -thumb in the name are thumbnail images, which are resized images, used in some components to improve performance.

The remaining images are static images in this directory in the non-dynamic parts of the website.

components

The components directory contains Vue.js components. Components make up the different parts of pages and can be reused and imported into pages, layouts and even other components.

  • Badge.vue - Used for orientation information (and group link) in Details pages.

  • Banner.vue - Used to display a cover image, title and Badge for all Details pages, and only cover and title in About us/Contact us pages.

  • Card.vue - Used on several links throughout the website. It features a thumbnail with caption, and provides a hover animation as interaction feedback.

  • Carousel.vue - Used to display a set of multiple images (slides), it is adopted in Event Details and Itinerary Details.
    It provides controls to skip between slides, otherwise it can also automatically switch slides.

  • CarouselMultiItem.vue - A carousel that displays multiple items at a time, used in our case to display the Points of Interest of an Itinerary in order.
    It includes previous/next controls (skips to the previous/next N items), and is scrollable with gestures on mobile.

  • Dropdown.vue - An accordion that displays/hides content, used to select between All-year events, Summer events and Winter Events (each having a separate dropdown).

  • TheFooter.vue - A responsive navbar for navigation on the bottom of every page, it includes landmarks for About us and Contact us.

  • TheHeader.vue - A responsive navbar for navigation on the top of every page, it includes landmarks for Home, All Events, All Points of Interest, All Itineraries, All Services.

layouts

Layouts include the view templates that are used as a structure for more pages. In our case, only one layout default.vue was sufficient for all the pages implemented.
This layout provides a sticky header on the top, and a footer on the bottom of all pages.

pages

This directory contains application views and routes. Nuxt will read all the *.vue files inside this directory and setup Vue Router automatically.

Database Design

The following schema represents the ER Model of the database used for the website.

In the actual implementation, some tables may have additional auto-generated columns (such as createdAt, updateAt), which were not used.
In any case, the ER only shows the useful columns that we actually needed for the final content of the website.
